The PostgreSQL developers have released a first alpha of version 8.5 of their open source database system. The developer release contains 36 patches. With its new approach of releasing alpha versions, the PostgreSQL project intends to give advanced users early access so they can test and report problems with new features and new code as early as possible.
The alpha versions are not stable and unsuitable for production use. They are, therefore, only available in source code form. Some binary versions may be released at a later date. Three or four further alpha versions are scheduled for release within a couple of months.
